The Pierce County Bike Map is intended to serve as a guide for bicyclists traveling to major centers, tourist attractions, and other key destinations within Pierce County. It identifies existing bikeways and scheduled bicycle improvements, but does not include future bicycle projects. The bike map focuses on on-road bikeways (e.g. roads with wide lanes, paved shoulders and designated bicycle lanes) and paved shared-use trails. You are required to wear a bicycle helmet in unincorporated Pierce County, Tacoma, and many other cities and towns in Pierce County. You can receive a citation for riding without a helmet. Bicycle helmets have been shown to reduce the risk of head injury by 85 percent and the risk of brain injury by almost 90 percent.
