Workshop makes understanding Social Security simple
Tuesday Oct 13 2009 8:36 AM
For over 70 years, Social Security has provided a foundation of support for workers and their families. This safety net remains in good times and bad.
Social Security 101 will introduce the Social Security program and how it protects you at retirement or if you become disabled, and your family if you should die. The presenter is Kirk Larson, Western Washington Public Affairs specialist for the Social Security Administration. He will also discuss some of the challenges facing Social Security in the future.
The presentation is free and open to the public. Social Security 101 will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 4 at Harbor Place at Cottesmore, 1016 29th St., N.W., in Gig Harbor, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Participants are asked to reserve a place by calling 253-798-8787. The program is jointly sponsored by Pierce County Aging and Long Term Care and the Social Security Administration.
Social Security provides a guaranteed income each year for more than 47 million retirees, family members of workers who died and people with disabilities. About 30 percent of Social Security beneficiaries receive survivor or disability benefits. Nearly two-thirds of retirees count on Social Security for most of their retirement incomes.
