Free stormwater workshop to assist homeowner associations

Monday Oct 26 2009 1:51 PM

Article PhotoMany homeowner associations are responsible for a stormwater pond or other stormwater drainage system in their communities. These systems need ongoing maintenance, and Pierce County HOA members can learn what to do and how to work together effectively at two upcoming workshops.

The first workshop will be held Nov. 3 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Pierce County Central Maintenance Facility, 4812 196th St. E., Spanaway, 98387.

The second workshop will be held Nov. 10 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Parkland/Spanaway Library, 13718 Pacific Ave. S., Parkland, 98444.

Both workshops will focus on stormwater system maintenance, including types of stormwater systems, how to identify a failing system, and basic maintenance requirements. HOA management issues, such as legal requirements, basic operational needs, and strategies for success will also be discussed.

The Public Works and Utilities workshops are free of charge but seating is limited and advance registration is required.

To register, call 253-798-2485 by Friday, Oct. 30. Workshop attendees will receive a copy of their HOA stormwater system plans, if available.

"Privately owned stormwater facilities are very effective at controlling neighborhood flooding and removing pollutants in the water, but they need to be maintained," said Surface Water Management water quality manager Dan Wrye. "We are often asked how homeowner associations can be better organized to do this maintenance. A properly maintained stormwater facility helps HOAs avoid costly repairs. An understanding of how their system works and how to maintain it minimizes costs and protects water quality."
