Judge Hecht announces resignation

The following is a statement from Bryan Chushcoff, presiding judge of Pierce County Superior Court:

"Through his counsel, Judge Michael A. Hecht today submitted his resignation as Pierce County Superior Court Judge, Department 9, effective Nov. 16, 2009 to me and to Gov. Christine Gregoire. A copy of his letter of resignation can be found here.

"The court's business has been hampered by the absence of a judge to work in Department 9 since March, and it was probable that but for Mr. Hecht's resignation, it would be some considerable time before the matter would be resolved. A Superior Court judge holds a position that requires the highest degree of trust and responsibility to preside over court business and to make important decisions in our community.

"We believe that this decision will begin to restore public confidence in the court and will allow the Governor an opportunity to appoint a new judge who can help shoulder the heavy workload in Pierce County Superior Court. Therefore, we welcome this decision by Mr. Hecht."
