General Description of the Key Peninsula-Islands Basin:

The Key Peninsula-Islands (KI) Basin is located in Pierce County, Washington. It includes the Key Peninsula which extends southward into Puget Sound and is bounded on the west by Case Inlet and on the east by Carr Inlet. It also includes the following islands: Fox, Raft, Ketron, Anderson, and Herron. Several drainages located along the Pierce/Kitsap County line form the northern boundary of the Basin which extends approximately 7 miles north into Kitsap County. The Basin covers an area of approximately 114 square miles. The major streams in the area include Rocky, East Fork Rocky, Minter, Huge, Little Minter, Burley, Purdy, Lackey, Schoolhouse, Vaughn, and Dutcher. The Basin supported approximately 19,000 residents in 1998.

There are a number of commercial shellfish growing areas in the Basin including Burley Lagoon, Minter Bay, Filucy Bay, Rocky Bay, and Oro Bay. Communities in the Basin include Key Center, Vaughn, Home, Lakebay, Longbranch, Burley, and Wauna. McNeil Island falls within the Basin boundary, but will not be included in the Basin Plan.
