On Monday December 21, 2009, Pierce County Sheriff's Deputy Kent Mundell was shot by a suspect while responding to a domestic violence incident at a residence in Eatonville. Deputy Kent Mundell passed away on Monday December 28, 2009, after a week in critical condition at Harborview Hospital in Seattle.

Deputy Walter 'Kent' Mundell was hired with the Pierce County Sheriff's Department on January 10, 2000. Kent is survived by his wife and two children, ages 10 and 16 years old. Kent has worked as a patrol deputy in South Hill and currently the Mountain detachment. Over the course of his career with the Sheriff's Department, Kent has served as a member of the Air Operations, Clandestine Lab Team, and as a Safety Committee Representative.

A fund has been set up for the Mundell family; anyone wishing to make a contribution may do so at any Columbia Bank location, any TAPCO Credit Union location, or online through the Pierce County Deputy Sheriff's Guild.

Welcome from Sheriff Paul A. Pastor!

It is a pleasure and an honor to welcome you to the virtual home of the Pierce County Sheriff's Department.

Since becoming your Sheriff, I have had the privilege of meeting many of you in person at one of the many public meetings we hold each year. You have probably heard me talk about your responsibility as a citizen to become involved in your community and to become educated about the issues facing us. Visiting our web site is a way to address both issues.

We have many challenges on the horizon. The recent performance audit of the Sheriff's Department identified the need for at least 60 new Deputy Sheriffs - at a time when many revenue sources for government are drying up. You have heard me discuss the need to continually stress the integrity of the department and the people who serve you.
