BenefitsCheckUp

BenefitsCheckUp is a free, online service from the National Council on the Aging that helps older Americans identify state and federal assistance programs that can help improve their quality of life. This confidential service contains a simple, straightforward questionnaire that takes no longer than 15 minutes to complete. Within minutes, seniors can get a report detailing the many programs and services for which they may qualify.

Certified Ombudsmen are a listening ear and a voice for residents of long-term care settings. Ombudsmen educate residents, staff, families, and the community about long-term care issues, resources, resident rights, and quality of life in long-term care.

The philosophy of the Long Term Care Ombudsman Program is to:
advocate for the rights of residents;
receive, investigate, and resolve concerns of the resident concerning the quality of life in the long-term care setting;
monitor laws, regulations, and policies which impact long-term care residents;
provide information to the public concerning long-term care setting; and
promote the development of consumer organizations concerned with long-term care facilities.

Pierce County Aging and Long Term Care (ALTC) is one of thirteen designated area agencies on Aging in Washington State. ALTC advocates for the rights of elders, and plans and administers long-term care programs that help older and disabled people to remain secure and independent.

The Department of Community Services:

Housing Services: Pierce County offers a wide variety of repair services to low-income County residents through the Housing Programs. A combination of several types of financial assistance designed to meet the needs of the clients makes it possible to provide help in many ways. The Minor Home Repair Program provides grants to eligible low-income homeowners to obtain emergency repair services and disability modifications to their homes. The Substantial Rehabilitation Program provides forgiven, deferred and repayment loans for extensive repair work for single family homes. The Rental Rehabilitation Program develops a partnership between local government and the private sector by combining the financial resources of both to improve the living conditions of low-income renters. The HOPE Program (Homeownership for People Everywhere) has been used to create first-time homebuyer programs in Pierce County.

Senior Citizen and Disabled Persons Exemptions are available to citizens who are at least 61 years old on December 31 of the assessment year OR retired from regular gainful employment by reason of a disability, with an income of $35,000 or less. Exemptions must be renewed at least once every four years unless there is a change in status or income. Proof of income is required in addition to the information requested on the application form. Proof of disability is also required.
The exemption freezes the value of the residence as of January 1 of the initial application year. The Assessor-Treasurer will continue to establish the market value of the property on an annual basis. The homeowner will be billed on the frozen value if it is less than the market value.
Senior Citizen and Disabled Persons Deferrals are available to citizens who are at least 60 years old on December 31 of the year in which they apply and who do not exceed annual income of $34,000. If the property owner meets all of the requirements, the Department of Revenue pays the taxes and special assessments to Pierce County on behalf of the taxpayer. The deferred amounts paid by the state become a lien and must be repaid to the state (plus interest) when the property ownership is transferred. RCW 84.38. Participants must apply each year with the Assessor-Treasurer's office.

The City of Tacoma, with its two Senior Centers, provides numerous Senior Services including mealsites, transportaion, recreation, health services, educational classes, special events and volunteer opportunities for people and 55 and older.

The Social Security Administration website offers information on Social Security and Supplemental Security Income programs, benefits application information, disabled persons support programs, death benefit information and transition from work to retirement, including estimates of future Social Security benefits.
