Explanatory Statement:

The Sumner School District’s proposed computer technology levy would follow a similar voter-approved levy that expired in 1997.

Money from the levy will help repair and maintain existing school computer systems, including networks that allow access to the Internet and e-mail. Levy money will purchase additional school computers and technology equipment and pay for staff training in computers.

The four-year levy would raise $1 million each year. The estimated levy rate per $1,000 of assessed property value would be no more than 56 cents in 1999, dropping to an estimated 52 cents in 2000, 48 cents in 2001 and 43 cents in 2002.

Because the district’s tax base is increasing due to development and other factors, total school district property tax rates will not increase above the current level if the levy is approved.

Statement For:

When Maple Lawn Elementary sixth-grader Rachael Norris needed information for a report about tidal waves, she turned to the Internet. Although her school library is well-stocked, the Internet was the only place Rachael could find the latest scientific research for her report.

Computer technology and the Internet are crucial to the business world, and they are an important part of the educational world, too. That’s why we urge you to support the Sumner School District’s Computer Technology Levy.

Computers help children:

learn basic skills. From learning to read to producing complex spread sheets, children use computers to reinforce basic skills (reading, writing and math) and to complement classroom teaching. Even our primary grade student use computers frequently…to practice reading, to write stories, to check spelling.

prepare for the job market . Just as Boeing engineers use computers to design airplanes, Boeing janitors use computers to access work orders. Computer skills will be vital to our children’s future employment.

conduct research . Computer technology helps children get the latest information about an endless number of topics. From encyclopedias on compact disks to Internet access, computers allow schools and children to get information in a more cost-effective manner.

Funds from the four-year levy will purchase and maintain computer equipment and pay for teacher training on computers. And if this levy passes, your property tax rate will still decline.

We hope you’ll join us – Citizens for Education – and support the Sumner School District’s Computer Technology Levy.
