The temporary off-leash area at Central Meadow opened on Thursday, July 2nd!
Pierce County and the City of University Place entered into an agreement to create an interim off-leash area for dogs at county-owned Chambers Creek Properties.
According to the agreement, the city committed funds for temporary installation of fencing, gates, and signage to secure nearly one acre of county property for off-leash use near the Chambers Creek Properties Central Meadow. The city is working with volunteers from SUNDogs, a local dog-enthusiast group, to raise the $12,000 needed to prepare the site. SUNDogs will monitor the interior of the fenced dog area.
The off-leash area is open to the public during daylight hours but may be closed during events at the Central Meadow.
Local dog owners pressed for an interim site until three permanent off-leash areas in the Master Site Plan are constructed. The first permanent site, located in the North Beach area, is slated to open in late 2010. The Central Meadow site is will remain in place no longer than the end of 2014.
Negotiations for the interim off-leash area began in 2007. Pierce County designed the site and will manage it as part of the public Chambers Creek Properties. Those wishing to donate to the project are encouraged to visit the SUNDogs website at http://www.updogpark.org.
