Tough times drive 2009 county budget

The Pierce County Council approved the 2009 county budget on Nov. 25, 2008. It now goes to the County Executive for his signature.

The budget process began with the Sept. 23, 2008 release of the executive's 2009 preliminary budget.

The $854.5 million avoids cuts to the core functions of county government -- public safety, criminal justice and transportation -- preserves 71 staff reductions proposed by the executive, and uses $3.4 million of the county's general-fund reserves.
