Candle fires are one of the few types of home fires that have actually increased over the past decade and two out of every five home candle fires start in the bedroom. In December, the number

If you use candles follow these safety guidelines:

NOVEMBER: If you are accenting your Thanksgiving holiday dinner with candles, secure those candles in a sturdy holder on a flat surface that won't tip over. Also, make sure the holder is big enough to collect the dripping wax.

DECEMBER: Candles are frequently used both for religious services and decorations (such as Christmas, Hanukah and other celebrations). Remember to keep lit candles well away from Christmas trees and other decorations. Don't place candles in windows where blinds or curtains can close over them, creating a fire hazard.

YEAR ROUND CANDLE SAFETY TIPS:

  • Make sure candles are placed in a sturdy, flame proof holder on a flat surface.
  • If you experience a power outage, use a flashlight and other battery generated light sources.
  • Do not carry a lit candle or use a candle to look for things in a closet or other confined areas.
  • Keep candles (and matches, lighters, etc.) out of the reach of children.
  • Don't put candles in a position where a pet could knock them over.
  • To avoid an extremely dangerous situation, do not use a candle for light when fueling equipment, such as a kerosene heater or lantern, as the flame may ignite the vapors.
  • ALWAYS EXTINGUISH A CANDLE BEFORE GOING TO SLEEP OR LEAVING YOUR HOME.
  • Know and practice the STOP - DROP - ROLL safety technique, in case someone's clothes catch on fire.
  • Make sure your smoke detector is in good working order.
