The Puyallup Tribe of Indians, in collaboration with Pierce County Department of Emergency Management, is developing a natural hazard mitigation plan.

Hazard mitigation planning is the process of determining how to reduce or eliminate the loss of life and property damage resulting from natural and human-caused hazards. The process involves four basic phases.

First, organize resources which include identifying and organizing members of the community as well as the technical expertise required during the planning process.
Second, develop a risk assessment which includes identifying the characteristics and potential consequences of hazards.
Third, develop mitigation strategies that contain prioritized mitigation goals, objectives and actions to help avoid or minimize undesired hazard effects.
Finally, develop a method of implementing the plan and monitoring its progress.

The Puyallup Tribe Mitigation Planning Team is composed of professionals from the Tribe and the County including:

  • Sheri Davis, Administrator, Puyallup Tribe of Indians

The meeting involved three main discussion topics: the overall Process used in developing the Plan, findings of the Risk Assessment, and a review of the Tribe's Hazard Reduction Blueprint. The planning team would like to thank the concerned citizens and government officials that were in attendance. The issues that were raised at the meeting are greatly appreciated and will be reviewed by the planning team.

For further review and analysis the Draft Plan was published on this website from December 22nd through February 10th. Currently, the Draft Plan is being updated by the Planning Team and will soon be submitted to FEMA Region X and Washington State EMD for their Pre-Adoption Reviews. Please check back in the coming months to see the final version of the Plan. The Plan will be published once approved by FEMA and Washington State and adopted by the Tribal Council.
