Currently there is only one requirement for training in NIMS. It is IS-700 'NIMS - An Introduction' and is designed as a self-study or independent study course. However, classroom versions of the training are also available.

NIMS IS-700 is required to be completed by October 1, 2005. Those agencies or jurisdictions unable to show 100% compliance will not be able to receive FY ?06 ODP grant funding with regard to intelligence and planning; resources (equipment); training; or exercising drills or tabletops.

Who is Required to complete NIMS IS-700 to show 'Compliance'?

Executive Level - Political and government leaders, agency and organization administrators and department heads; personnel that fill ICS roles as Unified Commanders, Incident Commanders, Command Staff, General Staff in either Area Command or single incidents; senior level Multi-Agency Coordination System personnel; senior emergency managers; and Emergency Operations Center Command or General Staff.
Managerial Level - Agency and organization management between the executive level and first level supervision; personnel who fill ICS roles as Branch Directors, Division/Group Supervisors, Unit Leaders, technical specialists, strike team and task force leaders, single resource leaders and field supervisors; midlevel Multi-Agency Coordination System personnel; EOC Section Chiefs, Branch Directors, Unit Leaders; and other emergency management/response personnel who require a higher level of ICS/NIMS Training.
Responder Level - Emergency response providers and disaster workers, entry level to managerial level including Emergency Medical Service personnel; firefighters; medical personnel; police officers; public health personnel; public works/utility personnel; and other emergency management response personnel.

The NIMS introductory course very likely will be required in FY'06 for state, territorial, tribal and local personnel who have emergency assignments at any level of government.

There are several options to completing IS-700:

-- Go to the online NIMS IS-700 course at the Emergency Management Institute. It will have the independent study version of the material as well as the test. That site also has downloadable materials for self-study. Please note: due to the large number of people accessing the website, it is best to go on before 10 am or after 3 pm.

-- Your department may request copies of self-study manuals from the Pierce County Dept of Emergency Management Training Coordinator, Judy Harmon at 253-798-2108. You may review the guide and answers your questions on a hard-copy of the test. Then go online to take the test.

-- You may register to attend a 3-hr class offered monthly at Pierce County Dept of Emergency Management. The test would be taken at the class and mailed into EMI. View the NIMS IS-700 Schedule and then complete the registration form.

-- You may request the 3-hr class to be offered at your location by contacting the Pierce County Dept of Emergency Management Training Coordinator, Judy Harmon at 253-798-2108. The test would be taken at the class and mailed into EMI.
