Become an ESAR volunteer

The Pierce County Explorer Search and Rescue (ESAR) unit is launching its fall recruiting drive for new members. Anyone age 14 or older is encouraged to attend one of the orientations (schedule at right) to learn about the organizations many volunteer opportunities.

The purpose of the ESAR program is to:

  • Supply trained people to assist local law enforcement in search and rescue operations in both wilderness and urban settings.
  • Provide valuable community service during disasters and support community events such as parades and celebrations.
  • Train people in wilderness living, search and rescue and leadership.Members who remain active in the program will develop self confidence and maturity.

This year ESAR has been called upon by the Sheriff's Department and Emergency Management to perform 27 missions, searching for lost individuals or evidence used in crimes. ESAR also assisted in one evacuation request.

Pierce County ESAR has significant capabilities and is considered one of the best equipped, trained and most active ground units in Washington State. The group also performs many community functions like assisting with the Junior Daffodil Parade, Pierce County Fair and numerous other events.

High school students receive community service credit after completing the required training in survival, leadership, problem solving, program management, communications and process improvement skills.
