In juvenile court, all cases are heard and decided by a judge. There are no jury trials. Respondents have the right to plead 'not guilty' throughout the criminal process and to request a trial. A 'not guilty' plea means that the respondent may require the state to prove in court that he/she is guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
If a case proceeds to trial, victims and witnesses may receive subpoenas. It is important for victims and witnesses to contact our office prior to appearing to confirm there has been no change in case status or scheduling.
