If the police are called right after a sexual assault has occurred, the responding officer will take a report and see that the victim is taken to the hospital for a rape exam. If the assault occurred some time ago and the physical evidence is gone, the officer may still recommend that the victim be seen by a doctor after the report has been taken. Completed police reports are submitted to the Prosecuting Attorney's Office for review by a deputy prosecuting attorney for a charging decision.
