Lake Spanaway Golf Course Hole #12Lake Spanaway Golf Course is built on a site acquired in 1959 from the Metropolitan Park District and additional property purchased in 1961 from Gus Breseman. These two properties were added to the other properties acquired which made up the 450-acre Spanaway Park Development Plan. The plan proposed to develop significant recreational improvements to the area including a park site, a recreation center, a regulation 9 hole par 3 course, driving range and clubhouse.

On January 5, 1965 the Board of Pierce County Commissioners signed Resolution #10598 providing for the issuance and sale of obligation bonds in the amount of $1.5 million dollars, securing the funding for the development of the park, golf course and recreation center. In June of that year, the county contracted O.R. Chase and Ken Tyson to construct and operate a golf course. The course was designed by the renowned golf course architect, A.V. Macan and facilities were designed my E.L. Mills & Associates.

It is the result of these and other actions over 30 years that we now enjoy the beautiful and challenging golf course at Lake Spanaway. We celebrate the efforts of many individuals during the past 38 years, but perhaps none more than Tom Cross, the Director of Pierce County Parks and Recreation from 1958 to 1981, and Superintendent of Parks, Lorne “Shorty” Campbell. It was Tom’s vision, leadership and commitment to this plan that gave us the golf course we all enjoy today.

The course was dedicated for “the enjoyment of residents of Pierce County” on March 31, 1967 and opened to the public the next day. Today, almost 40 years later, you will enjoy the fruits of many individuals’ hard work and dedication to the cause of providing the citizens of Pierce County and beyond, a truly majestic golf course. Lake Spanaway is among the top golf facilities available in the Pacific Northwest. We take pride in it’s daily presentation to you the golfer, our most valued customer.

As Premier starts its second year of managing the County Golf Facilities, it has started many exciting programs that are sure to meet your golfing needs. There a re new lesson programs, new weekly and monthly specials on green fees, food and beverages, range, and golf carts. Look for our new evening leagues as a place to have some low key weekly competition and meet new friends at the same time.
