CarLESS Commute encourages commuters to burn calories instead of fossil fuel, reduce traffic congestion and air pollution, and leave the car at home.

Thank you to all the participants and sponsors of the 2008 CarLESS Commute!

From June 2-15, thousands of Pierce County Commuters will be doing just that when they compete for prizes during CarLESS Commute and YOU can join them!

CarLess Team

CarLESS Commute is promoting:

  • Riding the bus!
  • Bicycling! If you are 5-30 miles from work try riding your bike!
  • Carpooling or Vanpooling!
  • Walking to your destinations!
  • Taking the commuter train!
  • Alternative work options!
    - If your employer is agreeable, try a flex schedule and work four 10 hour days, you can count the miles you save on the day you stay home!
    - The high tech way is to telecommute or telework, that is to work from home with your computer! Once again, you can count the miles you save by NOT going in to work!

Try any combination of these and be a CarLESS commuter!

Over the last 15 years participants of this program have saved:

  • 2,,465,411 miles
  • 123,271 gallons of gas
  • over 64 tons of environmental toxins

And that's just during the 2 weeks a year we keep track. Many people who have tried CarLESS Commuting have continued throughout the year making the impact even greater!

  • Vehicles produce up to 57% of our air pollution.
  • In one year the average car releases 700 pounds of pollution.
  • Emissions from a poorly maintained car are about 29 times that of a properly functioning car.
  • Increased traffic in your neighborhood decreases property value.
  • During rush hour more than 1.2 million cars JAM highways and roads.
  • I-5 has the 4th worse congestion of any arterial in the United States.

Did You Know:

  • In the United States 89% of all households own one or more vehicles.
  • 8% of the world's population own a car.
  • 70% of us in the Puget Sound area drive alone to work, 15% carpool and 8% take the bus.

CarLESS Commute is a fun way to help YOU cut the time spent on the
road driving alone.

Since 1991 Pierce County Commuters have set aside 2 weeks each year to Find a Better Way to Commute, kept track of the miles they saved, and sent in the results for a chance to win prizes like a new mountain bike from Bike Tech. And this year you can join the fun!

To be eligible for the bike and other prizes, the Participation Form must be completed and returned by July 3, 2008 to:
