In the spring of 2007, Pierce County Parks & Recreation Services began updating its Park, Recreation & Open Space Plan to identify opportunities to enhance the County's extensive park and recreation system.

This Plan creates a vision for an innovative, inclusive, and interconnected system of parks, recreation facilities, programs, and services that promotes recreation, health, and environmental conservation as integral elements of a livable community. It addresses the recreation needs of residents Countywide, while reflecting diverse community priorities within Pierce County.

As an update to the 2002 Park, Recreation & Open Space Plan, this Plan establishes specific goals, objectives, recommendations, and actions for developing, conserving,
and maintaining quality parks, trails, facilities, and open space. In addition, the Plan recommends a strategy for the implementation of capital and non-capital projects that will
most benefit the community.

Public Involvement

Throughout this year-long process, several venues, advisory groups, and community meetings were held in various county facilities to gain public input:

  • Three Community Workshops
  • Web Questionairres
  • Partners'/Stakeholder's Meetings
  • Youth Focus Groups
  • Technical Advisory Group
  • Planning Advisory Committee
  • Parks and Recreation Citizens' Advisory Board

Writing the Plan

The County hired MIG, a planning consultant, to facilitate public and key county staff involvement then assemble all the elements together into a written draft.

Review

The Technical Advisory Committee, Planning Advisory Committee, and Parks & Recreation Citizens' Advisory Board participated in the development and review of the plan.

Approval

Many steps of approval are required from the Parks and Recreation Citizens Advisory Board to the Pierce County Council.

A Living Document

Following the approval by the County Council, the plan becomes the official guide for park planning and recreation development for Pierce County Parks and Recreation Services.

Thank you for your involvement in the development in this plan. We now have the draft Parks Comprehensive Plan for review:
