Word on the Street: Improvements to 112th Street East (Woodland Avenue East to 86th Avenue East)

What's Happening
Pierce County will be improving approximately 0.9 miles of 112th Street East (CRP 5534). Improvements, designed to improve safety and relieve traffic congestion, include:

  • Expanding to five lanes with a two-way left turn lane.
  • Adding concrete curbs, gutters, and sidewalks.
  • Adding an enclosed storm drain system as well as stormwater treatment and storage facilities.
  • Adding a new traffic signal at 78th Avenue East, and improving the traffic signal at Fruitland Avenue East.
  • Installing street lighting.


Roadway Section


September 2008

  • Engineering: Roadway alignments are set which includes the lowering of 112th Street East near 74th Avenue East to provide improved sight distance. Two storm water pond locations have been identified, one at 112th Street East/78th Avenue East and one at 112th Street East/83rd Avenue East.
  • Land: Right-of-way plans are completed. We are beginning to obtain appraisals for the needed property and easements.


  • March 2006 to July 2010: Roadway design
  • March 2007 to December 2008: Finalize permits, environmental documents, plans, and estimates.
  • May 2008 to Nov. 2010: Acquire right-of-way property and easements.
  • Construction during 2011 to 2012

  • Engineering: $1.16 million
  • Right-of-Way Acquisition: $4.6 million
  • Construction: $6.39 million

Where does the money come from?

  • County Road Fund: $6.89 million
  • Traffic Impact Fee: $0.5 million
  • Transporation Improvement Board (State): $4.64 million
  • Other Funding: $0.12 million
