Word on the Street: Canyon Road East Northerly Extension & Grade Separation (Pioneer Way East to near the 52nd Street East /62nd Avenue East intersection)

What's Happening
Pierce County is designing the extension of Canyon Road East (CRP 5643). Improvements, designed to relieve traffic congestion, include:

  • Constructing a bridge over the Burlington Northern & Santa Fe Railroad Mainline.
  • Expanding and extending Canyon Road East to two lanes in each direction with a two-way left-turn lane.
  • Building concrete curb, gutter and sidewalk.
  • Constructing an enclosed storm drain system as well as stormwater treatment and storage facilities.
  • Installing a new traffic signal at Canyon Road East / Pioneer Way East.
  • Constructing a wetland mitigation site.
  • Closing existing 52nd Street East at-grade rail crossing .


Roadway Section


March 2008

  • Engineering: No work is being done at this time except searching for a suitable wetland mitigation site.
  • Land: Right-of-way plans have been prepared.


  • January 2008: County Council funding priorities have changed and there is currently no design work or right-of-way acquisition being done on this project. Further design, right-of-way acquisition, and construction is dependent on council funding.

  • BNSF Railroad: $0.5 million
  • Unfunded Revenue: $26.5 million
