Word on the Street: Replacement of Vaughn Bay Bridge

What's Happening
This project (CRP 5352) will provide improvements to South Vaughn Bay Road at its crossing of Vaughn Bay.

  • Remove the existing five span bridge.
  • Reconstruct the new bridge and approach roadways.
  • The new bridge will be a single span, prestressed, post tensioned, concrete girder bridge that will be 219 feet long.
  • The bridge and roadway will consist of two 12 feet wide travel lanes and two 6 feet wide shoulders.
  • Stormwater treatment embankments will be installed at several locations to treat runoff from stormwater.

October 2008

  • Engineering: Preliminary engineering is complete and final engineering is underway.
  • Land: Right-of-way plans are complete and acquisitions are complete.
  • Utilities: Coordination is on going to determine a schedule of potential intermittent high voltage power outages that may occur during construction.


  • December 2005: Permits, Environmental Documents, Plans and Estimates started.
  • February 2006 to Fall 2008: Right-of-way acquisitions have been completed.
  • 2009 to 2010: Construction.

  • Construction: $2,650,000

Where does the money come from?

  • Federal Bridge Replacement Fund: $1,693,000
  • Pierce County Road Fund: $1,297,000
