This road project involved the construction of 0.25 miles of new road on Canyon Road East between 196 Street East and 192 Street East.
The road project impacted 1.3 acres of wetland(pdf) through the placement of fill to construct the road and a stormwater treatment facility. Wetland mitigation occurred off-site, approximately 3.5 miles northwest of the road project. The site is approximately 11.5 acres, of which approximately 7.6 acres is wetland. Clover Creek is at the south end of the site and a U-shaped upland area is located along 20th Avenue East.
The work involved creation of about 2 acres of wetland in the upland area, and enhancement of 3.3 acres of reed canarygrass wetland. In general, the design expanded the existing wetland by excavating the upland area (creation), and planting native shrub species while controlling reed canarygrass in the existing wetland area (enhancement). Water for the wetland creation area is provided primarily by Clover Creek and rainfall.
The goals and objectives of the wetland mitigation site(pdf) involved: 1) replacing wetland acreage filled by the construction of Canyon Road East, 2) improving flood storage, sediment removal, downstream erosion and reducing flows, and 3) providing habitat for wetland associated species by providing large woody debris(pdf), establishing a buffer, providing native plant diversity and seasonally flooded areas.
Construction of the wetland mitigation site occured in the summer and fall of 2007. Additional plantings will be installed in the winter of 2008 and the spring of 2009.
