Let our Environmental Educators introduce your students to the wonders of the environment. We bring the materials and present lessons in recycling, natural resources, water quality and much more. You can select one or a series of sessions, each building upon previous lessons. All presentations are free of charge.
Waste Reduction Presentations Available:
- Each session lasts about an hour, and content is grade appropriate.
- Presentations are designed not only to meet a number of science learning requirements, but challenge students to think critically and engage in thoughtful discussion.
- Role playing, hands-on activities, games and simple chemical tests help students enjoy and retain the environmental lessons. They see how life is interconnected. You see engaged students and maturing thought processes.

No Time to Waste (Grades K - 12):
Recycling basics are covered with the three Rs: reduce, reuse and recycle. Students learn how we dispose of trash in Pierce County. They play the shopping game to learn about making choices to reduce their waste, sort recyclables from the trash, and learn about other products from hard-to-recycle resources. We can help you plan a follow-up field trip to a local landfill or other recycling facility(ies).
Science EALRs: 1.3, 2.1, 2.2
Pre/Post Visit-Lesson Plans:
These lesson plans support the concepts learned in the No Time to Waste presentation and are recommended (not required) before and after our classroom visit to extend the environmental learning. Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to view these files.

Compost Critters (Grades K - 12):
The second session of the recycling series is a closer look at organices recycling. Magnifying glasses bring students eye-to-eye with organisms moving through a worm bin as we explore the incredible world of decomposers. We follow an apple core to compost, back to the apple tree in the natural cycle of growth and decomposition.

Bite of the Finite (Grades 5 - 12):
This dynamic role-playing activity, the third session the recycling series, shows the social, economic and environmental realities caused by the unequal distribution of resources. Students are grouped into 'countries' for mining forays. They discover that as finite resources become harder to find, resource-rich nations gain advantages over resource-poor nations and that competition over resources can fuel both trade and conflict. The final realization hits when large portions of their resources are taken for disposal in a landfill.
Earth science and social studies courses are good settings for this presentation.
Science EALRs: 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.1, 2.2

Beyond Recycling (Grades 6 - 12):
In this program we delve deeper into the issues of consumption and the impacts of increased population. Real-life examples help students see how their daily choices impact the earth's natural resources. Prepare for a liveley discussion about the 'cost of cool' in relation to what we buy, how often we buy it, and why. The goal is to help students think about the environmental impacts of our shopping practices.
