The mission of the Solid Waste Management division is to provide Pierce County citizens with efficient waste reduction, recycling, disposal and household hazardous waste management systems, which protect public health and safety and the natural and human environment of Pierce County.
The key to success: partnerships
We partner with city and town governments to develop a comprehensive solid waste plan and with private-sector solid waste companies to implement the next generation of recycling and collection programs. These partnerships help us avoid duplication of services and save our customers money.
Reaching out
Since hiring our first Environmental Educator in 1988, we have taught the three Rs - reduce, reuse, recycle - to an entire generation of students. Annually, more than 25,000 students take part in environmental education classes which cover not just solid waste, but water conservation and sustainability issues.
We educate adults, too. Every year, we bring our environmental message to fairs, home shows and other events. Twice a year, 200,000 households receive our Earth Matters newsletter, filled with conservation and money-saving tips.
Coordinated efforts reduce illegal dumping
The Solid Waste Divsion coordinates Pierce County Responds, a comprehensive multi-agency response to the problems of illegal dumping and nuisance vehicles. We enforce when necessary, investigating complaints and recommending cases for prosecution, but our primary goal is to work with individuals and communities on voluntary compliance and cleanup. Educating our customers on safe and proper recycling and disposal methods helps make Pierce County a more livable community.
