Overview
Public Works and Utilities, Surface Water Management Division is addressing the roadway flooding problems identified in the Muck Creek Basin Plan on Christensen Muck Road between 40th Avenue E and Mountain Highway (SR 7).
The project will divert high flows from an existing wetland through which an unnamed drainage course flows. At the point where the drainage crosses Mountain Highway a flow control structure will be constructed to channel high flows via a pipe system northbound parallel to Mountain Highway to a new holding pond located at the corner of 340th and Mountain Highway. The property currently owned by Pierce County Surface Water Management, is approximately 11.7 acres of which only 4.5 acres could be used for the proposed pond. The other 7.2 acres is existing wetland which will be protected to retain the natural flow attenuation that wetlands provide. Moderated flows will continue to cross SR7 and follow the existing drainage course along Christensen Muck Rd. The excess flows will be stored in the pond and released at a controlled rate to the north approximately 500ft in a pipe and ditch system to South Fork Muck Creek. Releases to South Fork Muck Creek are controlled so there is no increase in peak flows that could affect flooding of the creek. In addition, conveyance along Christensen Muck Rd. will be improved. This improvement will require the replacement of 8 culverts and ditch regrading.
