Project Overview

Overview Drawing

What are we doing?

We plan to excavate near Sumner-Buckley Highway and install three 2-foot by 4-foot concrete box culverts. These culverts will move water from a tributary on the south side of the highway to Fennel Creek on the north. Currently, the water flows through a 36-inch culvert near Kelly Lake Road East and follows a roadside drainage ditch to Fennel Creek near the Kelly Lake Road bridge.

Two of the new culverts will discharge directly into Fennel Creek where it flows in the roadside drainage ditch. Trench excavation will extend into the roadway, which is the southern bank of Fennel Creek. Hand-placed riprap will be placed around the culvert outlet to avoid erosion.

Why are we doing it?

The proposed project will decentralize flow across the Sumner-Buckley Highway and prevent semi-annual flooding over the roadway.

What are the affects on fish?

Because Fennel Creek contains cutthroat trout, sculpin, and three-spined stickleback fish, and to protect water quality of the creek, Fennel Creek will be routed around the construction zone through a temporary pipeline for three or four days. Fish will be removed from the affected part of the creek before diverting the water.
