Low Impact Development (LID) emphasizes keeping and using on-site natural features to protect the environment - especially water. An LID project combines small-scale improvements throughout a subdivision. These features manage stormwater and maintain or restore pre-development watershed conditions.

Low Impact Development provides a toolbox of cost effective stormwater management techniques. LID offers environmentally sound alternatives to conventional (and often more expensive) stormwater treatment.

LID Techniques include:

  • Preserve natural hydrology
  • Manage stormwater close to where the rain falls
  • Minimize site disturbance and grading
  • Retain vegetation
  • Cluster development
  • Reduce impervious surface
  • Reforestation
  • Utilize natural features
  • Rain gardens
  • Bioretention systems
  • Landscape with native plants
  • Compost amended soils
  • Amended lawns and landscaping
  • Pervious concrete
  • Porous asphalt
  • Permeable pavers
  • Eco roofs (green roofs)
  • Provide LID education
