Pierce County is conducting the Lower Puyallup River Flood Protection Investigation study to address significant flood and floodplain mapping related issues affecting communities along the Lower Puyallup River.
The Phase 1 study is a first step in the process of finding ways to reduce the size of the recently FEMA mapped floodplain for the Lower Puyallup River. This study evaluated flood related conditions along the river as they are today and as they will be in 50-years if no new flood protection project is undertaken.
The study includes analysis for hydrology/hydraulics, integrity of the existing levee structure, sediment deposition and economic impacts from expected flooding.
The County has committed to looking at improving the flood control system in this area to reduce the impacts of flooding on our community. The information contained in the Phase 1 study is required for evaluating any improvements to the flood control system. The Phase 1 study was performed to US Army Corps of Engineers standards to allow for Federal assistance with this large project.
