UPDATE:
The McCormick Creek Culvert Improvements Project started on July 11th with the closure of Burnham Dr. in the vicinity of Woodhill Dr. A new box culvert was installed under the road and the road re-opened July 21st.
Pierce County employee?s and a WDFW biologist captured and transported over 50 fish around the proposed Burnham Drive work zone prior the removal of the existing culverts. The fish were placed back into McCormick creek downstream of the work area. The fish were primarily native cutthroat trout as large as 5 inches long.
The second phase of the project began on August 8. The second phase is to install 5 timber and bolder wiers to raise the water surface elevation of a plunge pool, thereby removing the fish passage barrier of the hanging culvert downstream of Woodhill Drive. Among the first tasks with this project was fish salvage and dewatering of the instream work area. We captured and transported a total of 89 cutthroat trout fingerlings, 22 coho salmon fingerlings, as well as a handful of brook lamprey and 1 sculpin within this reach of stream.
The project is expected to be complete by August 17th. Construction phase is completed. Planting to start in late October 2006.
