General Description of the Clover Creek Basin:
Clover Creek flows generally northwest for 13.8 miles from its headwaters about 6 miles east of the Spanaway community to Steilacoom Lake. Its 74-square-mile drainage basin makes up about half of the combined Chambers-Clover Creek drainage area (Chambers Creek is the 5-mile creek flowing from Steilacoom Lake to Puget Sound). Significant tributaries to Clover Creek include Morey Creek and the North Fork of Clover Creek. The largest lakes in the basin are Spanaway, Tule, and Steilacoom Lakes.
The Clover Creek basin contains portions of unincorporated Pierce County, including the Parkland and Spanaway communities, significant portions of the City of Lakewood, a small portion of the City of Tacoma, and portions of McChord Air Force Base and the Fort Lewis military reservation. A small portion of the Wards Lake watershed contained within unincorporated Pierce County is also addressed in this planning effort.
On October 18, 2002, Pierce County Surface Water Management issued the Draft Clover Creek Basin Plan and Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement. A 30-day public comment period was held that concluded on November 18, 2002. Surface Water Management hosted two public meetings during that time and solicited public comment on the Draft Plan and Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement. Comments received during the comment period resulted in several revisions to the plan and SEIS. On November 26, 2002, the Pierce County Planning Commission reviewed and recommended adoption of the Basin Plan.
The Clover Creek Basin Plan should go before the Economic and Infrastructure Development committee on June 21, 2005.
