District Court Toll Violations FAQ

The ticket was issued as a toll violation for evading the toll payment on the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. All drivers are required to pay on their eastbound trip from Gig Harbor to Tacoma when you cross the bridge. By Washington law, the ticket is issued to the registered owner of the vehicle.

No. The toll violation will not affect your personal or commercial driver's license. No points will be assessed to your driving record and no record of this infraction will be sent to your insurance company. However, if you fail to pay the fine, the Court will notify the Department of Licensing, and it may affect your ability to renew your vehicle license tabs. Failure to properly register your vehicle may result in additional infraction and criminal charges.

You must respond to this ticket within 15 days from the date the ticket was issued. This date is on the front page of the ticket you received in the mail. You may pay the $52.00, request a toll hearing, or submit a statement and proof that the vehicle was sold or traded prior to the date of the toll violation, or that your vehicle/license plate was stolen prior to the date of the toll violation.

When you contact the Court, please be sure to include all ticket numbers and all vehicle license plates to ensure that all your tickets are handled.

You should contact Good to Go! directly when:

You have a transponder.
Your Good to Go! account was charged but you still received a citation.
You have a receipt or credit card statement showing you paid the toll payment, but you received a citation.
You have received notification from a rental company that a citation will be sent in your name.

Payment Information

Make all checks and money orders payable to Pierce County District Court. Please include the ticket number(s) on your check or money order.

You must contact the court in person to request community service, work crew or day reporting.

You must check the appropriate box on the back of the ticket you received in the mail and mail or personally deliver this request to the court to receive a court date.

In a mitigation hearing, you agree that you committed the violation but would like to explain the circumstances. You may request an in-court hearing or a hearing by mail.

If you mark the in-court mitigation hearing, the court will send you a court date. You must appear on that date. If you fail to appear, the court will find that you committed the infraction and an additional fail to appear penalty of $25.00 will be added. If you fail to pay the total amount due, the case will be referred to a collection agency and the Department of Licensing will be notified. There is no appeal from a mitigation hearing.

If you mark the mitigation hearing by mail, you must complete the Toll Hearing by Mail Statement and mail it to the court. A judicial officer will review your statement and a court order will be mailed to you with the decision. If a penalty is imposed, you will be given a date the money is due. If you fail to pay the total amount due, a late penalty of $25.00 will be added, the case will be referred to a collection agency and the Department of Licensing will be notified. There is no appeal from a hearing by mail.

In a contested hearing, you present evidence denying you committed the infraction. You may request an in-court hearing or a hearing by mail.

If you mark the box for an in-court contested hearing, the court will send you a court date. You must appear on that date. If you fail to appear, the court will find that you committed the infraction and an additional fail to appear penalty of $25.00 will be added. If you fail to pay the total amount due, the case will be referred to a collection agency and the Department of Licensing will be notified.

If you mark the contested hearing by mail, you must complete the Toll Hearing by Mail Statement and mail it to the court. If you fail to appear, the court will find that you committed the infraction and an additional fail to appear penalty of $25.00 will be added. If you fail to pay the total amount due, the case will be referred to a collection agency and the Department of Licensing will be notified.

No, payment of the $4.00 toll will not satisfy the penalty for the toll violation.

The $52.00 penalty for toll violations will not be reduced, absent extreme circumstances.

When a case becomes delinquent, the computer system used by the court automatically issues a delinquent statement to the registered owner of the vehicle. If the title has not been transferred at the Department of Licensing, the delinquent statement will be sent to you as the last registered owner. Please contact the court so we may notify the collection agency of the responsible party.

If a payment is returned to the court due to non-sufficient funds (NSF), it is considered a failure to respond. You will be assessed the $25.00 late penalty, as well as a $20.00 NSF fee.

The Department of Licensing will place a hold on the renewal of your vehicle license tabs if you have two toll tickets unpaid during any 12 month period. You must pay the amount due to receive an adjudication form to clear the tickets with the Department of Licensing.
