The Tacoma Narrows Airport (TIW) is a public 568-acre general aviation facility. TIW is located four miles west of Tacoma and one mile southwest of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. Pierce County purchased the airport from the City of Tacoma in 2008. Planning for the Future: Airport Master Plan

Pierce County initiated an Airport Master Plan Update study for the Tacoma Narrows Airport in late 2012 with a grant from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to fund 90% of the study with Pierce County funding the 10% balance.

The last Master Plan for Tacoma Narrows Airport was published in 2003 but used 1997 baseline data. The FAA recommends that airports periodically update their master plans as conditions affecting airport operations and development occur.

This is Pierce County’s first master planning study for Tacoma Narrows since the County purchased the Airport from the City of Tacoma in 2008. This Master Plan Update serves as Pierce County’s strategy for development of the airport for the 20-year planning period and beyond, consistent with its long-term vision to be a major provider of transportation services and economic development for Pierce County and the surrounding region.

The Master Plan goals guide the County’s near- to long-term development plans for both airside and landside facilities at the Airport. The following plan goals were identified in coordination with the County, public, and other stakeholders:

Enhance safety and security
Support economic growth
Accommodate demand
Preserve/protect investment
Promote sustainability

These goals provided the framework for defining evaluation criteria used later in the study to evaluate the various development alternatives for the Airport.

Creating Opportunity

The goal of the TIW Masterplan is to provide a strategic framework for airport improvements that will create opportunities for economic development and capitalize on current airport infrastructure assets.

Funding

Key activities and improvements called out for implementation as part of the TIW Masterplan are/will be funded through a series of grants from the FAA, Pierce County and the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). Funded improvements are dependent on all partners providing funding.
