County Council funds unit to fight property crime

The Pierce County Council voted unanimously to fund a Sheriff’s Department Property Crime Unit in 2016. The Prosecutor’s Office will receive $200,000 to use towards prosecuting the additional cases that will arise.

"We've successfully reduced burglaries in Tacoma by over 20 percent," said Prosecutor Mark Lindquist. "We expect to duplicate that success throughout Pierce County through collaboration and vigorous prosecution."

According to Sheriff Paul Pastor, 3,080 burglaries were reported in Unincorporated Pierce County in 2014. Due to lack of resources, deputies were only able to follow up and investigate 650 of the reported burglaries. This new unit will work to lower the number of burglaries and increase the percentage of reports that are investigated.
