TACOMA, WA - Today the Pierce County Prosecutor’s Office charged Michael Muthee Munywe, 36, with rape in the first degree and kidnapping in the first degree with sexual motivation.
Investigators say Munywe forced himself on a 15-year-old girl last Wednesday.
"Protecting children is one of our top priorities," said Prosecutor Mark Lindquist. "No parent should have to worry about their child walking in our community."
On November 21, 2018, Tacoma Police Officers were dispatched to the 800-block of Tacoma Avenue S. The South Sound 911 Dispatcher, told officers that the caller, later identified as A.G., 15, gave her location but that she wasn’t able to talk freely. She was acting as if she was talking to her mother and when asked if someone was trying to hurt her, she said yes. A.G. also told the dispatcher what she was wearing.
Officers arrived in the area and saw A.G. and a man, later identified as the defendant, Michael Munywe, walking on South 9th Street. As Officers passed, they made eye contact with A.G. and noted she had a terrified look on her face as if she was in extreme distress.
Officers stopped and immediately separated A.G. from Munywe and asked A.G. what happened. While crying, A.G. told officers she got off the bus near South 11th Street and Yakima and saw Munywe at the bust stop. She said Munywe approached and said, "I missed you, I'm glad I see you again." A.G. didn’t know Munywe but thought he was a friend of her mother’s and didn’t think too much of it.
A.G. said the Munywe kissed her on her cheek and she pushed him away. He tried again to kiss her and hug her a second time and she pushed him away again.
A.G. says Munywe grabbed her arm and forced her to walk closer to him. A.G. said she tried to get away but she was afraid that Munywe would hurt her. A.G. says Munywe dragged her into an alley and physically forced her to perform oral sex on him.
Bail is set at $1,000,000.00.
Charges are only allegations and a person is presumed innocent unless he or she is proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
