The new year is well underway and I want to briefly check in with you on what is happening here at the Pierce County Council.
Public Safety has always been a top priority for me and the 1st District (one of the largest unincorporated areas in Pierce County). I am pleased to announce that I will be serving as the chair of the Public Safety, Human Services, and Budget Committee (PSHSB). The committee meets every second and fourth Monday of the month at 1:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at the County City Building, 930 Tacoma Ave S, Room 1045.
A major issue throughout the county right now is drug dealers setting up businesses in abandoned and rented houses. Trying to get drug houses shut down and cleaned up is a very difficult and lengthy process. I will be working on finding a solution to shorten the time it takes to rid our communities of these drug houses. I will also be looking at addressing squatters who not only deal in drugs, but destroy unoccupied homes. The Sheriff’s office will be briefing the PSHSB Committee March 9, to explain the process involved in identifying drug houses or squatters and the challenges in closing down this activity.
The PSHSB Committee will also hear in the near future, a presentation on the Sheriff’s Department staffing study. This study was conducted to see where we are and where we need to be in order to continue to make our communities a safe place. Other committee topics over the course of the year will include juvenile courts, drones and jail operations.
I am pleased to share that the council adopted the recently completed Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) flood insurance rate maps. The Council’s adoption is required in order for citizens and businesses to obtain flood insurance under the federal program. This information is listed on my website piercecountywa.org/district1 or you can click here for the maps and more information.
If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to call, email or send me a letter and I am happy to help in any way I can. If you are interested in participating in a board or commission on behalf of District 1 please click here to view vacancies.
