I Voted

August 2015

It looks as if last month’s heat wave broke a few records as one of the driest Julys we've seen in the Puget Sound area. I hope that you were able to stay cool. I've added a few tips below on how to endure those hot summer days.

August 4th is Pierce County’s primary election. There are several important items on the ballot. Click here to find everything you need to make an informed vote. You can read the voters pamphlet, find voter information, locate free ballot drop locations, download a sample ballot, and more.

In this month’s issue, you will also find information on the Pierce County Sheriff’s Academy, Puyallup’s Spray Park, Fife’s National Night of Safety, and a special salute to our U.S. Coast Guard for their hard work in protecting our country as they celebrate on August 4th. There are several other suggestions for free family outings as well, so enjoy!

Please remember to contact me if there is anything in Pierce County government that I can assist you with. My staff and I look forward to hearing from you.

Warm Regards,

Beat the heat!

According to the Centers for Disease Control, everyone should take these steps to prevent heat-related illnesses, injuries and deaths during hot weather:

  • Stay in an air-conditioned, indoor location as much as possible.
  • Drink plenty of fluids even if you don't feel thirsty.
  • Schedule outdoor activities carefully.
    • Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing and sunscreen.
    • Pace yourself.
  • Take cool showers or baths to cool down.
  • Check on a friend or neighbor and have someone do the same for you.
  • Never leave children or pets in cars.
  • Check the local news for health and safety updates.

Spray Park

Cool off at the Kiwanis Kids Spray Park

The Kiwanis Kids Spray Park in Pioneer Park opened May 21, 2015, to an excited group of kids and adults alike.

It will remain open for the summer from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.

Pioneer Park is located at 333 South Meridian, Puyallup, WA 98371.

Coast Guard

August 4th is U.S. Coast Guard Day

We salute Coast Guard personnel today and every day.

U.S. Coast Guard Day honors the military branch that protects our waters and shorelines. The U.S. Defense Department suggests that this day is largely an internal celebration for all Coast Guard personnel and their families, past and present. But, we'd like to encourage everyone to honor the brave members of this important branch of the military.

Celebrate U.S. Coast Guard Day by learning more about the responsibilities and functions of the U.S. Coast Guard. They are now playing an even  more extensive role in Homeland Security to protect our country.
