Connie Ladenburg

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

This Wednesday, I'm hosting a meeting of the Pierce County Council in our district and I'd like to invite you to attend. It'll be at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 28, at The Evergreen State College's Tacoma Campus. The address is 1210 6th Avenue Tacoma, Washington.
Among other topics and regular county council business, we will have a budget presentation that you won't want to miss. There will also be a public forum portion of the meeting, where you are encouraged to address the council with any comments, questions or concerns. Mark your calendars now, and I hope to see you there!

November will be Diabetes Awareness Month

Diabetes affects nearly 30 million children and adults in the U.S. today. That's nearly 10 percent of the population. Recent estimates project that as many as 1 in 3 American adults will have diabetes by 2050 unless we take steps to stop diabetes.

In an effort to educate more people about the disease, the Pierce County Council will soon adopt a resolution naming November 2015 as Diabetes Awareness Month (American Diabetes Month takes place in November as well). This year’s theme for American Diabetes Month is “Eat Well, America!”

Eating well means enjoying delicious and healthy food that helps with diabetes management. One way to find healthy local food is by utilizing the Puget Sound Fresh App created by Pierce County and partnering agencies. You can download it for free for Apple or Android devices.

I will also be participating in a special recognition ceremony honoring diabetes patients sponsored by Multicare Health System in early November. Watch for more on that later.

WSAC appointment

As you may be aware, I'm very active with the Washington State Association of Counties (WSAC). I wanted to report that I've recently been appointed to the Washington Courts Workgroup, a subset of the Board for Judicial Administration.

It's important to me that Pierce County have a voice in the process as Washington State counties work together for the common good. I'll keep you updated as the workgroup progresses, and feel free to contact me if you have any ideas or suggestions you'd like be to bring to the table.

One last word...

We've been waiting for months to learn just how much of an economic impact the 2015 U.S. Open had on our area. I'm now told we should be expecting the final report on the matter by November 3rd. I'll make sure to pass along that information when it's released.
